Summary
Net_Dérive is an artwork in the domain of
location sensitive mobile media art. It is an installation piece
extending beyond the confines of a gallery, to include the urban
environment. Conceived for participative use from advanced mobile
telephones, they call upon techniques from interactive music applied
to new contexts that include the interplay of sound and image, an
exchange between participants in the gallery and participants in
the streets, and the creation of an abstract narrative from audiovisual
media captured on multiple mobile devices. Deployed on portable,
networked, location-aware computing devices, we seek to create a
kind of musical instrument, thinking of the city-as-instrument.

Net_Dérive was
made possible thanks to a grant from the French Minister of Insdustry
RIAM program,
as part of the Mosomuso (Mobile
Social Music Software) project. It was realized by the invaluable
participation of Clicmobile,
MaxMSP/Jitter developer Ali
Momeni, and intern Gary Tunak.
It
was presented in October 2006 in Paris France as part of CSL Paris'
Intensive
Science exhibition at the Maison
Rouge. |
